The Holy Gasp - The Love Songs of Oedipus Rex
This album is the right kind of ‘out there’ for me. It’s full of vision and big arrangements. It’s theatrical. It’s cathartic. Most of all, it’s very seriously devoted to not taking itself too seriously. I was introduced to “What I Gotta Know” first, with it’s quirky video and catchy enough chorus that I wake up humming it. Once I got into the meat of the whole album “Black Elevator” was a quick favourite. There are enough unique sounds and solid songs to keep me coming back often. It’s like eavesdropping on a stranger’s therapy session. That they pull off such a wide variety of musical styles and do all of them so well is a draw for sure. Then the band turns each of those styles on its head to make sure you’re paying attention. These are the anti-love songs for the modern times.
